The "port " is a 1/80 scale scratch built cargo ship some 6 ft 5 inchs long
the hull is of 1/32 ply with halfords matt gpr on the inside and fighter aces fine matt cloth for the outer finnish.
Almost all the fixtures and fittings are cast resin.
The ship carries 50lbs of water balast to give a realistic water line.
The balast is pumped in/out by a caravan water pump, this removes the need of carrying great block of concreat to and from the poolside !!!.
At the moment im just finnishing off the " belgulf union " a 6foot tanker, this is near to water trials when the weather picks up a little,
the way things are going that should be around june or july !!! |

skinned in 2/2 twill carbon fiber, interior skinned in carbon fiber/kevlar,didn't build the boat for maximum speed/competitive racing, just for fun. My original 1960's Solent built from and Aerokits kit. Took me years to finish and only launched in the late 1990's. Not often sailed hence the Bobs board speed controller. I intend to replace with two Mtronic Esc's and sail her more often. The number is wrong for the door type but I intend to rectify this and will then try to model on a real example. Really nostalgic model that I cherish dearly. |

Restored recently from a very scruffy but complete original (was petrol powered) boat I aquired from the family of the deceased owner/builder earlier this year. I fitted 2 x 850s (both good secondhand units)in tandem to get more power to the original single shaft which was replaced with a new 20 in long unit to allow more space for the twin motors.Fitted a Tornado 50A ESC that works really well for a budget unit. Pictured here on it's first run at Knightcote Club near Warwick on 25 Oct 2010 |

Own build in style of late ww2 MGB/MTB using Perkasa type GRP hull, ply deck and platicard superstructure details etc.
Twin Graupner 600 Race motors (-left and right handed rotation), twin rudders.
Bofors and Oerlikons rotate.
First attempt at RC boat build so a bit heavy.
Goes well but short battery life on full throttle. |

The boat originally ran on 12v but I increased it.It goes as fast as I would want on this setup. Prop aerates on one turn and am going to try trim tabs. Steering is a bit vague too- don\'t know how to rectify this. Speed controller cuts out occasionally due to heat.
Don\'t know how to estimate speed-see photo. |

Not tested it yet. I\'m actually going to power it with two 18.5V 5000mAH Lipos, 37 volts in total. (1.28KG). The speed controller is water-cooled. I don\'t know what the top speed will be but I suspect it will be ridiculously fast! I\'ll start with a 50mm prop and try out different sizes. Could this potentially be the fastest fireboat in the world? |

I have now modified my notes on the set up. I am using a propshop 4 blade cleaver prop, and am getting a really good turn of speed, with excellent acceleration, using a custom made alloy gearbox, belt driven, 2:1 ratio. I could get more speed, but the boat is at the point of being unstable. The gearbox has greatly improved the efficiency, whilst water cooled, I think it would be fine wiothout,. motor is cold after 15 mins or so flat out running. |

Runs very fast, one could say take-off speed. I have to keep off max revs as the boat is out of the water. Fastest scale model I have ever owned. Another genuine Aerokits model, restored and rescued. Originally had an IC engine, evidenced by the gungy insides and ruined prop shaft. |

The boat is very fast because its so light. The top speed of the boat is way more than scale speed but when I slow down it runs for about 1/2 hour. I tried a top spec racing battery in it and it started to bounce around and leap out of the water. Not scale speed but huge fun! |

The boat as yet is in need of quite a bit of TLC. It was originally used to run-in aero glow engines for aircraft use. It then languished in a loft for about 15 years. After looking at it, I was going to re-motor it with a 12v mabuchi motor I found in a drawer in my work shop. That motor is probably the same age as the boat but does run I have tried it. I hooked the whole thing together after greasing the prop shaft and used a direct drive coupling. Powering it with a 2Ah 7 cell nicad. The noise was supprising but everything held together and the prop wash seemed as if it would go. As yet that is as far as it has got, and it has been put back in the loft. I may well look at it again next summer. I would like to get it going if only for my grand children to see. The problem is that although my main hobby involvement is aircraft I would have to get a different radio set up, yes?.
Thank you for the e-mail

The Speed Controller draws only 25 Amps at full motor speed which unloaded is 10100 revs forward and 7500 reverse. Scale speed on the water is just about correct to the full actual craft viewed on the Pathe News film clip from the 1950's.The battery is actual 4.6Amp/h not 4Amp/h as shown in table. |

Comments:
My Model is some 20 to 25 or more years young & wore out two .35 glo motors over the years & only has a 1/8 inch only steel, drive shaft which I recently replaced & always used a leather washer (no metal noise) between the drive plates as modelled from the old 'Taplin Twin' type (never torn) & I updated to a SC .40 Glo motor not for speed but just as a plodder, hand starts with chord are easy & if you use electric starter loosen the glow plug in the thread when starting and it WILL fire & run at idle & disconnect glo lead and screw in plug and take to water etc. MY model actually weighs some 20 to 22 pounds.(I could not delete the 176 ounces in the table above) & exhausts from the factory muffler into a tin can resonator & is super quiet out the stern & no nitro & water pipe is wrapped around muffler which in cooling takes away noise energy. it took quite a while to get the combination of motor and prop, but it ended up with a 2 blade racing prop from prestwich models and it gives good performance plus a reasonable run time. there is a picture on the other types section |
