Fireboat Funday 2010!

Good news the Fireboat Funday on Sept 12th is back on, this is due to a very kind offer from Marie and Graham two of our regular visitors, who have contacted the respective people about the use of Watermead Country Park, I have accepted the offer and had it confirmed 10/08/10 that the local authority have given us the green light to hold the event there, format will be virtually the same and we look forward to seeing as many people there as possible.
Regards Pete D.

Sunday - The Main Day!
# The lake is over half a mile long so free sailing will be available at all times. IC boats are allowed providing they are not too noisy and not too fast.
# 9AM - Setup of the steering contest, rescue boat, stands and tables.
# 10AM - You come along! and things kick off along with the first rounds of the steering contest! It's not compulsory to take part in this.
# Free sailing, the water is yours all day if you'd prefer to just give your boat a spin, the only thing we ask is you don't go fast near the steering contest area.
# Stands, there will be stands up to put your models on while they're out the water.
# Peg board, to avoid interference make sure you get the right peg first!... unless you have the 2.4GHz ones!
# Midday - Hopefully there will be a mobile catering vehicle but this cannot be guaranteed so it's advised you do bring some sort of food along even if it's snacks to keep you going!
# 1PM(ish) - Second half of the steering contest, there is usually a catch to make it fair for all skills and model types! (I'm going to win this year though) :D
# 2.30PM(ish) - Steering contest buoys cleared away and free sailing for all! As many as possible on the water for photo purposes!!!
# 3PM(ish) - Awards for steering contest winners up to third place and sometimes also for the most highly detailed model etc.
Facilities
# There are toilets a short walk from the lake but there are no catering facilities. There is usually an ice cream van on the car park and the Hope & Anchor pub which is close by does good meals but is very popular. Also the Hobby Horse pub does good food which is a short drive away.
What should I bring?
# Your boat of course! The event is not entirely restricted to fireboats though! The crash tender became popular due to Aerokits and so if you have any other Aerokit model such as these: Fairey Swordsman, Patrol Torpedo Boat, Sea Commander, Sea Queen, Sea Urchin, Sea Nymph, Fast Patrol Launch, Sea Scout, Sea Hornet, Sea Rover, Star Fish, Solent Class Lifeboat, Waveney Lifeboat, Tara Yacht or the Sea Hawk Catamaran, they are welcome as well!
# Wellies! As it's a natural lake it's easier to launch your boat if you have wellies on, specially if the water is low.
# Food & Drink - Unless you want to rely on the catering van or local pubs, but I'd advise you to bring something yourself instead.
# £1.50 for the Country Park entrance.
Location/Directions
# The lake is part of Watermead Country Park for those with Sat-navs enter: Wanlip Road, near Syston, Leicestershire, LE7 1PD
# For anyone in the UK with valid postcodes the directions will be shown below!
# If you leave the M1 at either junction 22 southbound or junction 21a northbound and follow the signs for the A46 towards Newark. At the A46/A607 roundabout (Hobby Horse roundabout) turn right heading towards Leicester. Then take the ramp approx. 400 yards from the roundabout at the Bentley Showroom. At the small roundabout turn left and follow the road along until you come to the T junction. At the T junction turn left and follow that road to the roundabout and go straight on at that roundabout. You will have a large lake on your left and the Hope & Anchor pub 50 yards up on your right. Keep on that road and just before the road turns right you take the sharp left turn into the Country Park. Here you pay £1.50 to enter the park and follow the road through the Country Park until you get to the large car park and you will see King Lears Lake straight in front of you through a large gate.
Further Comments
# There is over 150 people living within 2 hours drive away and 260 within 3 hours! It would be fantastic if that many turned up. Previous events have even seen some people from the Isle of Man come across with their boats! Try your best and I hope to see you on the day!
